DIY FACE MASK TUTORIAL

As we do our part in preventing the spread of COVID-19 via social distancing and staying at home, we can also help frontline workers by making masks. Here, we have provided tutorials to make two types of masks that can be completed in around 15 minutes with a sewing machine. Join us in our efforts to help doctors and nurses around the Bay Area.

Way 1

You'll need a sewing machine for this one, but every mask takes less time!

Way 2

All you need is a pair of scissors and a ruler! Although this technique is not as effective, you can make a mask out of a shirt!

Step 1

Cut out two 10" x 6" rectangles of cotton fabric. Use tightly woven cotton(e.g., quilting fabric or cotton sheets). Cotton T-shirts are adequate but sheets and fabric are preferred. Lay the rectangles on top of each other, creating a single rectangle.

Step 2

Fold over the long sides 1/4 inch and stitch down to create a hem. Fold the fabric 1/2 inch along the short sides and hem.

Step 3

Run a 6 - inch length of elastic through the hem on the shorter sides. With a large needle or bobby pin thread the elastic through. You can use hair ties or head bands if you don't have elastic. String can be used but make the ties longer and tie the mask behind your head

Step 4

Pull the elastic on the top or the bottom to hide the knot inside the hem.
